In praise of the short mobile game

May 16, 2026 · Lukas Brandt

Mobile stores push endless games — daily logins, battle passes, systems built to never end. But some of my favorite recent plays wrapped up in an afternoon and were better for it.

Hollow Lantern is the example I keep coming back to. It tells its story, respects your time, and stops before it overstays its welcome. That restraint is rare and worth celebrating.

A short game can commit to an idea. It doesn't need to stretch one mechanic across fifty hours, so every part can pull its weight.

If you're tired of games that treat you like a chore to manage, go find something you can actually finish. It's a different, cleaner kind of satisfaction.
